    • J.O. Simmons described his wife Harriet's fatal illness in a letter to his Uncle Simpson and Aunt Sally Simmons. "Amy Plantation Nov 3 / 69 " ... I had the best Doctor in the Parrish on the third morning after she was taken sick. He was very attentive on the second morning after he was called he gave her case up as hopeless - on the evening of her 5th days sickness I sent for him again He came and staid by until the morning of her death - and early just before day-break he went for Dr. Wadell for counsel saying to neighbor Hayes & his wife (who were with us all the time from her first days sickness until her death) that her symptoms were decidedly better that he would try and get Dr. Wadell to come and see her Dr. Wadell is an old physician one of the most noted in the state and it is not often he will do more than counsel by advise He started and came part way when Mr Hayes on his return home about one mile from here met them & informed them of her death - The Dr said her case was congestion of the spine and brain - She was in great pain the first three days after that did not seem to be in much pain - She was not conscious of anything much of the time after the 2nd days sickness - do not think she realised much pain after that - She was conscious enough part of the time to notice the children & the neighbors but could not talk - would often smile and nod her head when spoken to or turn her head when she meant no - I believe the Dr done all he could to help her - but O, I do not believe he understood her case ...
