Father Tanner, Stanton, b. 27 Mar 1783 d. After 1850 (Age 67 years) Mother Duell, Ruth Marriage 1809 Cayuga County, New York, USA [6] Divorce Abt 1835 Notes - George McDaniel (personal communication) located court records in Macoupin County, Illinois concerning charges for fornication and adultery against Ruth Tanner and William Holton, and a charge against Ruth for bigamy. The case was transferred to Greene County, Illinois after Stanton Tanner and another man were charged with threats of violence against Holton. The result was that Stanton and Ruth divorced.
In Greene County, George McDaniel also located records of a lawsuit by Stanton against Ruth and William Holton for damages resulting from their affair. These records produced two important genealogical facts. First, depositions from persons who attended the marriage of Stanton and Ruth stated that they were married in Cayuga County, New York in 1809. (George McDaniel suspects they were married in the Town of Locke.) Second, Jennette was Stanton's daughter. In the pleading, Stanton said that Holton "ill-treated Jenette Tanner . . . the daughter and servant of the plaintiff (i.e. Stanton)". The children of Stanton and Ruth were mentioned in other places in the court records but neither the children's names nor numbers were given.
These events occurred in 1834-35. [6]
