  • Name Martin, Walter Hyde
    • Presumably named for his maternal great-grandfather Walter Hyde, who died in the Revolutionary War.
Birth 1806  USA Find all individuals with events at this location
    • Walter's birthplace is unclear. His birthplace was listed as New York in the 1900 US Census for his children Elizabeth (and Zerviah, who was in the same household), Cleoden and Alfred, but as Vermont by Lycurgus. His grandson Walter Gaynor also gave Walter's birthplace as Vermont on Zerviah Martin Gaynor's death certificate. Some sources give his birthplace as Claverack, Columbia, New York. Claverack may have been inferred from Walworth's Hyde Genealogy which stated that Walter's parents moved from Claverack to Bainbridge, New York in 1806. If that is true, Walter may have been born in Bainbridge or nearby Afton, New York.

    • Earl and Zerviah may have become acquainted between 1795 and 1800 when Zerviah's family was living in Middleburgh, Schoharie County, New York and Earl's family was living in nearby Rensselaerville, Albany County. Zerviah's brother Elijah was reportedly born in Claverack in 1801, and Walworth wrote that Daniel and his family moved to Bainbridge in 1806. Note that the Afton Enterprise article (see notes under Daniel Hyde) says that Daniel moved to Bainbridge in 1801. But this seems unlikely given Zerviah's marriage in Claverack at the end of 1804. • Notes
    • Gravestone includes the following: "Why do we mourn departed friends or shrink at deaths alarm Its but the voice that Jesus sends to call them to his arms. The memory of the just is blessed/"

The Blenheim Township Minute Book 1822-1844, records that Walter was a Pathmaster (overseer of highways) for the second concession in 1831, 1832, and 1838 and a pound keeper in 1837 and 1838. Many of the Township laws concerned animals and fences, and the Minute Book included the earmarks which were used to identify the owners of animals. These marks included cropping, slits, notches and holes. Walter Martin's mark, which was a square crop of the right ear with a hole in the same ear, was recorded June 4, 1832.

The Minute book is described at http://www.kipp-blake-families.ca/prnceton.htm
